Kathryn Mammel

Chief of Staff

LYI Chief of Staff Kathryn Mammel is a nonprofit leader with a passion for hands-on learning.

As an undergraduate at Dartmouth College, Kathryn studied classical archaeology, a field in which learning quite literally means getting your hands dirty. The thrill of learning in situ at archaeological sites–ffrom writing papers in the college cemetery to analyzing archaeological remains on mountaintops in Greece–showed Kathryn what captivating educational experiences could look like. Those experiences have inspired her to create similarly engaging learning opportunities for young students.

Kathryn brings to LYI a breadth of relevant experience across law, education, strategic partnerships, and nonprofit governance. After graduating from Yale Law School, Kathryn practiced law at a major international law firm before pivoting to spearhead strategic partnerships for the Brooklyn-based arts/ed-tech startup Shared_Studios. She has coordinated a major academic center at Yale Law School, worked directly with students as a professional middle and high school advisor, and connected nonprofit leaders with mission-aligned board members.

Outside of LYI, Kathryn champions hands-on learning in her own community as co-founder of Wonder and Think, an early-stage emerging children's museum in Beaufort, SC. She is also constantly learning on the job as the mom of a curious and energetic elementary school-aged Young Inventor of her own.
